Beautiful Good Night Pictures
In various mythologies around the world, night is personified as a goddess, playing several roles in the stories of contact and conflict between the human and the divine. In Scandinavian mythology, night is Nótt, referred as “darkness” by the gods, “dream-goddess” by the dwarves, and “joy-of-sleep” by the elves. For Ancient Greeks, night was “Nyx”, mother of Hypnos (Sleep) and Thanatos (Death). It’s pretty obvious that the time when light disappears has always overwhelmed the entire human race, urging people either to fear it or to worship it as a deity (which is more or less another way of exorcism of fear itself).
Although nowadays sleep has been studied thoroughly and mostly decoded by scientists, nighttime still retains part of the mystery that it used to hide according to those ancient myths. Entering the night is still intriguing, possibly romantic, often soothing and relaxing, and most probably the beginning of a trip to the unknown. Naturally being a nighttime habit, sleep can be any of the aforementioned things, making us feel the need to give or send a wish to someone who’s about to go to bed – or even kiss them goodnight. These everlasting human customs prove that going to sleep is still considered something worth distinguishing from the rest of the 24-hour period that is the day.
